The new law passed in Ontario 2009, prohibits the smoking in a motor vehicles with a minor under the ages of 16


(reports estimate use ranging from 3-30% among pregnant women)

Hyperactivity, Depression and anxiety, Problems with memory

(these affects are often delayed until the child is 3-6 years old or older)

There is no proven safe level for alcohol during pregnancy

(although the evidence is that heavy drinking causes Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, research cannot establish a safe level for alcohol and therefore no alcohol at all is seen as the safest practice)

Society is blaming and judgmental

(stigma and scrutiny cause mothers not to get help for their problems and are even far more evident for aboriginal women, poor women and women of color)
